The Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA) Initiative in Benin

The EOA Initiative is working towards streamlining EOA into national, regional and continental food production systems in Africa. The Initiative is currently being implemented in eight African countries with plans underway to roll it out on the whole continent.

Benin is one of the countries where the initiative is being implemented and OBEPAB is the country lead organization leading in the implementation of EOA activities. It is working with cotton farmers in the country. Cotton is one of the industrial crops in the country and just like many other such crops, cotton is heavy on agrochemicals.

However, thanks to the EOA initiative, OBEPAP is working with cotton farmers training them on how to organically produce cotton. It is training them on organic methods of cotton husbandry; how to protect cotton from pest and disease infestation, how to manage soil fertility without using chemical fertilizers, how to mix cotton with food crops and many other organic production methods.

BENIN is therefore one of the best performing countries in terms of adoption of EOA Initiative and in this regard, it is one of the countries that will be benefiting from the TURING FOUNDATIONsupported project on scaling up learning through application of key agroecological and organic agriculture technologies and practices to enhance farmer uptake for biodiversity conservation in Africa. The project aims at using farmer videos to in documenting and dissemination the EOA technologies that favor protection of biodiversity.

The project is currently being implemented in three African Countries; Benin, Kenya and Mali.
