THE 2023 EASTERN AFRICA AGROECOLOGY CONFERENCE (EAAC)
The Conference Organizing Committee (COC) of the 1st Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference to be held from 21st to 24th March 2023 in Nairobi, Kenya, wishes to invite individuals, organizations and networks to this great conference to register for participation.
This conference aims to invoke consciousness and motivate regional and continental communities to dialogue how to invest in interventions which can ameliorate the negative impacts of the current unsustainable food systems by transitioning towards more environmentally friendly solutions with long-term vision and planning.
The conference will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, at Safari Park Hotel from 21st – 24th March 2023 and will include exhibitions, plenary and breakout sessions as well as field excursions to agroecological enterprises. The conference will be a hybrid event comprising in-person attendance and livestreaming for online participants
Conference Title: 1st Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference: Transforming Food Systems for Responsible Production, Consumption and Social wellbeing.
Conference Theme: Strengthening Resilience and Sustainability in Food Systems for Environmental and Socioeconomic Development.
Shared Vision: Access to sufficient and healthy food for all, produced in a way that respects the environment and provides fair income to producers.
Purpose of the conference: Contributing to the sustainable transformation of food systems towards responsible production, consumption, and markets in Eastern Africa, from farm to plate.
Conference sub-themes
- Production, productivity, scaling up and sustainability of farming systems based on environmentally friendly technologies and methodologies
- Best practices towards food security, nutrition, consumption, and health: Soil health and farmer managed seed systems
- Women and Youth in agroecology
- Ecological organic trade, markets, and economy
- Institutional and policy drivers for agroecology transformations
- Financing agroecological transformations.
Expected Outcomes
- Embraced overall food systems transformation agenda in Eastern Africa in line with agroecological principles and practices.
- Connected and strengthened ecosystem of organizations and initiatives working towards food systems transformation based on agroecology
- Advanced strategies and joint initiatives on key levers for food systems transformation (knowledge generation & dissemination, policy reform, market systems development, investments – amongst others).
- Enhanced support and implementation of agroecology-oriented policies from government institutions and other key stakeholders in the region.
Expected Inputs
- Key challenges occasioned by rapid changes in agriculture and their impact on people, crops and the environment, and possible mitigation measures identified.
- Awareness about the potential of agroecology for sustainable production, consumption and contribution to green economy created.
- Successful examples and initiatives that show agroecology works showcased and amplified.
- Opportunities for strengthening agroecology agenda and practice identified and action plans created
- Conference report, conference resolutions, policy brief (or conference journal). Key elements of the conference declaration will be developed in advance and backed up during the conference.
Date and Venue
The conference will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, at Safari Park Hotel from 21st – 24th March 2023 and will include exhibitions, plenary and breakout sessions as well as field excursions to agroecological enterprises.

Target Groups
The Conference will bring together over 500 participants (300 physical, 200 virtual) and 50 exhibitors from various countries who have a strong interest in the growth and development of agroecology. Specifically, the participants will include:
- Policy makers and governments, representatives from various related line Ministries (agriculture, health, environment, water, etc.) at national and regional levels
- Organizations and initiatives working towards food systems transformation.
- Farmers and Farmer Organizations
- Civil Society Organizations including consumer associations
- Private sector
- Strategic partners and donor agencies
- Academia and research institutions
- Local, national, regional and international media
CALL FOR ABSTRACT FOR PAPERS, POSTERS AND EXHIBITIONS
The Conference Organizing Committee (COC) of the 1st Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference to be held from 21st – 24th March 2023 invites calls for abstracts for papers, posters and exhibitions from interested researchers and practitioners.
Types of Abstracts for papers, posters and exhibitions
The conference will be hybrid to provide an opportunity for researchers and academia to present their work and for farmers, practitioners and policymakers to share their experiences and/or advocate for certain interventions and pathways. The conference will therefore accept abstracts and posters within the following categories:
- Traditional academic/research abstracts,
- Practitioners’ views and experiences
- Policy briefs.
- Creative arts (spoken word, animations, music, graffiti, dance, paintings etc.)
- Exhibitions and side events
Abstract submissions should be structured as follows:
❖ For Papers and Posters
- Introduction
- Significance (of the research or issue)
- Methodology/approach (used to gather the data or information)
- Results (key findings or experiences)
- Conclusion (final verdict and recommendations)
- Abstracts: Number of words: 500, Font: Times New Roman, Size:12, spacing 1.5
- Full Papers: Number of words: 7000-8000, Font: Times New Roman, Size:12, spacing 1.5
❖ For Exhibitions and Side Events
- Any individual or organization interested in participating in the conference through exhibition or side event must submit a proposal including detailed description of the proposed exhibition or side event, including an explanation of how its thematic focus relates to the conference theme “Strengthening Resilience and Sustainability in Food Systems for Environmental and Socioeconomic Development”, and the six sub-themes of the conference.
- Kindly attach detailed description of the exhibition or side event, including all organizing partners, elements of the exhibition/side event, dimensions and the thematic focus.
Submission deadline:
- Sending out a call for abstracts: 1st December 2022
- Deadline for abstract submission: 30th January 2023
- Communication to accepted abstracts and call for full papers: 6th February 2023
- Receipt of full revised abstract: 9th February 2023
- Receipt of full papers: 23rd February 2023
- Review of full papers/presentations: 10th March 2023
- Corrections and submissions: 17th March 2023
- Publication of final conference program: 15th February 2023
- Publication of conference abstracts: 28th February 2023
