EOA History
EOA is a holistic production management system that considers the agro-ecosystem in all its diversity. It focuses on attaining a balanced food system designed to enhance biological diversity, promotes healthy use of soils, air and water; relying on renewable resource in locally organized agricultural systems
The EOA Initiative is an initiative that promotes Ecological Organic Agriculture (EOA). It was started in response to the African Union Heads of State and Government’s call for the promotion of organic farming in Africa. The African Union Commission, in collaboration with PELUM Kenya and partners supporting ecological organic agriculture, organized an inception workshop on organic agriculture in May, 2011 in Thika Kenya, with financial support from the SSNC to discuss how to implement this decision. The workshop successfully resulted in a roadmap, concept note and development of an African Organic Action Plan to mainstream ecological organic agriculture into national agricultural production systems by 2025.
Since its birth, the initiative has achieved considerable success, beginning with successful pilot activities in six countries; Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – Eastern Africa: Zambia – Southern Africa and Nigeria- Western Africa supported by SSNC; Baseline studies were conducted in Benin, Mali and Senegal with coordination by BvAT and support from SDC. Currently, the initiative is supported by Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation (SDC) and Swedish Society for Nature and Conservation (SSNC).
