SUMMARY:INVITATION TO A RAPID ASSESSMENT STUDY ON THE CONTRIBUTION OF AGROECOLOGY ON NUTRITION AND FOOD SECURITY IN AFRICA USING SYSTEMS THINKING AND MODELLING
DESCRIPTION:As one of the key Agroecology stakeholders in Kenya\, we are inviting you to a one day Agroecology workshop next week on Tuesday 18th July 2023\, starting 8.30am at the ICIPE Campus\, Bee health board room. \nThe aim of the workshop is to exchange ideas and perspectives on agroecology (AE) and its adoption and to engage you in a phase of participatory modeling. \nThe workshop has been designed in two main parts: \n\nUndertake discussions on practice of agroecology and its contribution to food nutrition and security\nBuild a concept model for agroecology adaptation for policy influence\n\nThe workshop is part of an  Eastern Africa project that has been awarded to BvAT by the US Department of State at the Africa Union ( USAU) for a period of 1 year. The purpose of this project is to implement activities that will document comprehensive evidence on the contribution of agroecology to nutrition and food security. \nIt is expected that the project will build foundations for engagement with policy makers and influence decisions on investments and mainstreaming of agroecology in the Eastern Africa region. Additionally\, the project will help build a critical mass (multistakeholder) for sustaining results achieved through the project. \nThis workshop will therefore form the main data generation process through mental modelling to provide a causal loop diagram (CLD) on factors that affect Agroecology adoption and its contribution to nutrition and food security.

The conference will be a hybrid event comprising in-person attendance and livestreaming for online participants \nConference Title: 1st Eastern Africa Agroecology Conference: Transforming Food Systems for Responsible Production\, Consumption and Social wellbeing.\nConference Theme: Strengthening Resilience and Sustainability in Food Systems for Environmental and Socioeconomic Development. \nShared Vision: Access to sufficient and healthy food for all\, produced in a way that respects the environment and provides fair income to producers. \nPurpose of the conference: Contributing to the sustainable transformation of food systems towards responsible production\, consumption\, and markets in Eastern Africa\, from farm to plate. \nConference sub-themes \n\nProduction\, productivity\, scaling up and sustainability of farming systems based on environmentally friendly technologies and methodologies\nBest practices towards food security\, nutrition\, consumption\, and health: Soil health and farmer managed seed systems\nWomen and Youth in agroecology\nEcological organic trade\, markets\, and economy\nInstitutional and policy drivers for agroecology transformations\nFinancing agroecological transformations.\n\nExpected Outcomes \n\nEmbraced overall food systems transformation agenda in Eastern Africa in line with agroecological principles and practices.\nConnected and strengthened ecosystem of organizations and initiatives working towards food systems transformation based on agroecology\nAdvanced strategies and joint initiatives on key levers for food systems transformation (knowledge generation & dissemination\, policy reform\, market systems development\, investments – amongst others).\nEnhanced support and implementation of agroecology-oriented policies from government institutions and other key stakeholders in the region.\n\nExpected Inputs \n\nKey challenges occasioned by rapid changes in agriculture and their impact on people\, crops and the environment\, and possible mitigation measures identified.\nAwareness about the potential of agroecology for sustainable production\, consumption and contribution to green economy created.\nSuccessful examples and initiatives that show agroecology works showcased and amplified.\nOpportunities for strengthening agroecology agenda and practice identified and action plans created\nConference report\, conference resolutions\, policy brief (or conference journal). DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Family Farming & Agroecology Discussions Community of Practice (CoP)! \nThe objective of this group is to establish synergies\, connect existing organizations and networks and encourage proactive multi-stakeholder exchanges to enhance the community of practicioners on family farming and agroecology by co-creating and sharing knowledge through focused thematic discussions. \nEach discussion will be held around a theme chosen by the co-organizers for 4 weeks. The discussions is based on a brief paper introducing the theme\, providing general background and highlighting key questions to be considered to build a shared understanding on goals of the discussion. \nMain objectives of the Family Farming & Agroecology Community of Practice Discussions: – Facilitate open access online discussions on family farming and agroecology; – Provide a “purpose-driven” multi-stakeholder space to discuss specific theme and exchange knowledge on relevant topics for family farmers and agroecology practitioners; – Establish proactive synergies and collaborations among stakeholders and existing networks of practitioners from all levels working for the promotion of family farming and agroecology in Africa; – Increase awareness and enhance knowledge-sharing on family farming and agroecology. \nE-DISCUSSION ON THE CO-CREATION\, SHARING AND DISSEMINATION OF LOCAL INNOVATIONS FOR HEALTHY SOILS IN AFRICA 20TH APRIL – 20TH MAY 2022 \nThe FAO Family Farming & Agroecology Community of Practice in Africa is implementing a discussion on ‘The co-creation\, sharing and dissemination of local innovations for healthy soils in Africa’\, co-organized by key actors working for the promotion of family farming and agroecology in different regions and on different scales in Africa. \nThe discussion will be open from the 20th of April to the 20th of May.
