The workshop on ‘project and financial management for Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative in Africa’ was focused on building two capacities of EOA implementing partners in East Africa: project management and financial management. The workshop was held between the 19th and 22nd of September 2016 at the Gelian Hotel, Machakos Kenya.

Using the World Café methodology, participants were divided into groups for facilitated discussions about their field experiences, the key gaps and priorities for immediate interventions with regards to project and financial management for Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative in Africa.

Project and Financial Management;

As agriculture play an important role in the socio-economic and cultural fabric in Africa, agriculture is placed at the forefront of the increased impact on the environment. The Ecological Organic Agriculture Initiative for Africa has long been debated and is believed to bring about new responses to environmental challenges if properly implemented. This workshop therefore sought to build the capacities of implementing partners to improve how they implement the initiative activities.

Key gaps identified;

For the EOA initiative to achieve its objectives, it is paramount for its projects to be effectively managed both operationally and financially. This workshop was therefore organized against the backdrop of identified operational challenges and accounting and financial challenges. These gaps include late reporting, not capturing important aspects of the projects activities while reporting, inadequate support documents, improper use of budget lines and overspending.

Priorities/key interventions;

Project and financial management is a complex thing and so as a remedial measure to the identified challenges, it was agreed that implementing partners need to understand project and finance management principles and best practices for organizational and project success improved; they need to be equipped with skills on effective project and financial management to support effective implementation of EOA and related programmes in Africa and finally, they need to be equipped with skills and understanding on how to prepare reports (narrative and financial) in ways that can be appreciated by various key stakeholders including donors.

These were covered in the workshop through presentations, group tasks, plenary sessions and a field trip.
